1993

Legal information now on offer!

1993 saw the introduction of a legal information service at Coffs Harbour City Library.

Mayor John Smith officially opened the Legal Information Access Centre on 16 August 1993, with State Librarian Alison Crook being a guest speaker on the day, alongside Assistant Director of the Law Foundation, Dawn Wong.

At the time, Coffs Harbour City Library was one of only eight libraries in NSW chosen to host this service.

It would have been an exciting time for library staff to suddenly be part of this state wide service which was designed to provide access to up to date, plain language resources, which answered every day-type questions about the law. Staff had already received training from the State Library of NSW in how to use the service and would have been eagerly waiting for someone to come and ask a legal question!

This legal information service has been running now for over twenty years at Coffs Harbour City Library, albeit with a number of name and ‘branding’ changes. It is now known as Find Legal Answers and continues to provide our community with access to good quality legal information, however this is no longer just through a book collection, but a book collection that works in conjunction with a comprehensive website offering a range of legal information, including online full-text books which have been specifically selected by law librarians at the State Library of NSW.

Come in and ask us a question!
